Nestled in the heart of New South Wales, lies our enchanting home: the Blue Mountains. If you ask any visitor, they’ll tend to acknowledge that the mountains are very special. If they’ve visited many times (or stayed any longer than a day-trip)… they’ll know the mountains are pure magic. From ancient waterfalls to mossy forests, there are so many wonderful places to discover and explore across this vast area. So many, that we’ve limited this list to favourite spots located close to our retreat centre. Let’s dive in, shall we?

1. The Three Sisters

No Blue Mountains list is complete until this iconic and sacred site has been mentioned. Standing sentinel over the Jamison Valley, First Nations Legend has it that these towering sandstone pillars were once three sisters turned to stone, forever frozen in time. As the sun rises or sets, casting a golden glow upon the cliffs, the Sisters seem to glow, illuminated by the soft light. When you do visit us at HB, it’s certainly worth taking some time to soak in the views from Echo Point; feeling the ancient history, and whispering stories through the breeze.

Time from Happy Buddha Retreats: Approx. 15 minutes by car.

2. Wentworth Falls

Another well-known spot, for good reason. Wentworth Falls gloriously cascade over the escarpment into the valley below. There are multiple trails to enjoy it in all its glory, such as the Wentworth Falls track, the stunning Undercliff track, or historic Princes Rock lookout track. If mobility or energy levels don’t allow a trek, not a problem — simply visit the lookout at the top. For an even more magical experience, visit at dawn or dusk when the falls are bathed in the soft light of the rising or setting sun.

Time from Happy Buddha Retreats: Less than 5 minutes by car. (Or about a 2km walk if you’re feeling adventurous!)

3. Minehaha Falls

This one’s more of a hidden gem, tucked away in a secluded corner of the Blue Mountains. As you follow the trail through eucalyptus forests, you’ll emerge to be greeted by the sight of crystal-clear waters tumbling gracefully into an emerald pool that makes you wonder if you’re imagining it. Surrounded by the sounds of nature, and the scent of eucalyptus in the air… it’s an oasis, to say the least. Note: this is a short walk, with a fairly steep (non-slippery) descent!

Time from Happy Buddha Retreats: 16 minutes by car. (Or about a 2km walk if you’re feeling adventurous!)

4. Leura:

Moving away from pure nature, the town of Leura deserves a mention in itself. This charming little down makes you feel like you’re in another decade, with its tree-lined (gorgeous in autumn) streets, quaint cafes, boutique shops, and historic buildings. Explore the Leura Mall for its specialty stores, fine chocolate shop, and galleries. The town even has its own gorgeous (and in my opinion wildly underrated) lookout, Sublime Point.

Time from Happy Buddha Retreats: 8 minutes by car.

5. Kirtan on Kailash

If you’re a music or chai tea lover — once a month you’ll find a beautiful gathering involving all the above in the Mountains. This spiritual gathering offers an opportunity to open your heart through bhakti yoga. Rooted in Vedic tradition, a Kirtan is essentially a call-and-response style song or chant. Broadly, the idea is that by singing devotional mantras Kirtans; you’ll access a sense of inner peace, harmony and connection to something greater than yourself. Speaking from experience, this particular Kirtan group of musicians are wonderful. If of interest, find more info here.

Time from Happy Buddha Retreats: Venue shifts – but usually in Leura, so 10 minutes by car.

6. Wentworth Falls Lake

Last but not least (and a popular volunteer hang spot): Wentworth Falls Lake is a lesser-known gem. Watch ducks, picnic, do some yoga, take a nap, or leisurely stroll along the lakeside trail. Here, sunlight dances upon the lake’s glass surface, casting shimmering reflections that sparkle and melt stress away… Sound good? Well even better, this peaceful spot is only a stone’s throw away! Tip: You’ll witness some gorgeous sunsets here.

Time from Happy Buddha Retreats: An easy (relatively flat) 1.9km walk, or 3-minute drive away!
