Yoga, Lunch, Nature & Clarity — and all Before 5pm
There’s something quietly powerful about pressing pause. Tucked in the Blue Mountains at Wentworth Falls, Happy Buddha’s half-day retreat offers a soul-soothing circuit-breaker — a few unhurried hours of movement, meditation, nature and nourishment that stay with you after you’ve headed home.
I hadn’t realised how much I needed space until I gifted it — to a friend, and, unexpectedly, to myself. One Sunday in May, I booked us into the Half-Day Retreat at Happy Buddha Retreats in Wentworth Falls. A short drive from Sydney, this soul-soothing sanctuary in the Blue Mountains is a calm spot to recharge: calming bush surrounds, thoughtful programming, and a deliciously unhurried pace.
What followed was a few simple hours that felt expansive in all the best ways. In the time it could take me to doomscroll a Sunday afternoon away, I’d moved, breathed, created, wandered, and felt something inside start to ease.
A tranquil escape 90 minutes from Sydney
Stepping into Happy Buddha’s retreat space is like stepping into a cocoon of calm. The fireplace crackles gently in reception, and soft light filters through the windows. The main yoga studio itself is hidden behind a bookshelf – a delightful detail that creates a secret sanctuary.
Our group, all women on this occasion, is warm and welcoming. Some have come solo, others with friends or family. The gentle yoga class that kicks off the day is fluid and accessible, designed to soothe rather than sweat. The hour moves quickly but leaves me feeling spacious and centred — reminding me how good it feels to simply stretch, breathe and move with intention.
Nourishment and connection
Lunch is a wholesome, plant-based feast: sweet potato and black bean chilli with guacamole, brown rice, vegan sour cream (coconut yoghurt and lemon juice – it really works!), and a tangy pineapple salsa I’ve already attempted to recreate at home. Healthy, nourishing and packed with flavour. As we share a table and chat with fellow retreaters, I’m reminded how easily and gently conversation can flow when you’re there to slow down and be in the moment.
Creative practice with depth
Vision boarding is the wild card for me. As someone who’s more pragmatic than ‘woo,’ I’m unsure how I’ll go. But the room fills with quiet focus, and I find myself absorbed in the process — cutting, arranging, letting instinct lead.
However, it isn’t until later that night, at home, that I realise the images I chose ended up saying more than I expected. Another participant shares that the experience makes her want to prioritise making art again — something she’s missed.
A mindful walk in the mist
I love the suggestion from our beautiful facilitator Claire to find a hammock, bench or quiet spot outside if we feel called to it. On a sunnier day, this would be a blissful setting to swing in the breeze and soak in the stillness — attuned to the sun on your skin, the wind on your face, and the many sounds of the mountains, from the chatter of cockatoos to the rustle of leaves in the gum trees.
Although the usual sweeping mountain views are hidden behind soft drizzle and fog, the nature meditation is still grounding. We wander through the bush in silence, collecting leaves, stones, and petals to create a shared mandala in our final practice. It is simple, sensory, and strangely moving.
The half-day retreats are held monthly on Sundays. This Sunday is Mother’s Day, so several guests are mother-daughter pairs. Their words during the closing circle are surprisingly tender and thoughtful — a reminder of how shared time can be the most meaningful gift of all.
I walk away with a quieter mind, a lighter body, and the intention to bring more gentle movement back into my everyday life — not just for fitness, but for peace.
